Biography

Catharina (De Vries) Seaman is a part of US Black heritage.

Catharina De Vries was born on April 10, 1790 in or near Clarkstown, Orange County (now Rockland county), New York. She was baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church in Clarkstown June 1797. She is the mixed-race daughter of Johannes de Vries and Henne Van Horn. She was the first of six children.^[1][2]

Her family moved away from Clarkstown in the Hackensack River Valley to New York City in about 1806. She may or may not have moved with them.

She married William Seaman in about 1806. They had at least five children, probably more.

1. Sylvester Seaman was born in 1806.^[3]
2. Deborah Ann Seaman was born on March 16, 1810 in Rockland County, New York.^[4]
3. Carol H Seaman was born about 1812. She might be a daughter-in-law.^[5]
4. Margaret Seaman was born about 1817 in Haverstraw, Rockland County, New York.^[6]
5. Fanny Seaman was born 1832 in New York.^[7]

Her husband William died in 1860.

Catharina died on January 30, 1861 in Manhattan, New York County, New York.^[8] She is buried in the Mount Repose Cemetery in Haverstraw, Rockland County, New York.^[9]

Note that Catharine is identified as white on some census records, and black on others.
