Biography

Martha Grierson was born in Ireland.

Martha Grierson was the daughter of William Grierson and Elizabeth Palin. She was probably born around 1745, based on her having been married before 1767.

She was already married to James D'Arcy, son of John D'Arcy (abt.1701-1758) and Elizabeth (Judge) D'Arcy (bef.1710-1773) at the time her uncle Joshua made out his will on 2 December 1766.^[1] They had the following known children:

Her uncle, having no heirs "of his body," had bequeathed his estates, including Hyde Park,^[9] to Martha and her children. Because her son John would have to later fight a court battle in order to keep those lands, the paperwork showing this inheritance is listed in the D'Arcy of Hyde Park holdings.^[10]

Martha died in about 1782, while her children were still young. The Hyde Park Papers include a copy of the court order for a Guardian appointment, dated 23 November 1782, that lists the names and ages of the children.^[11]
