Jack Carney was born on 30 July 1894 in Console Street, South Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia. His parents were Thomas Carney (1870-1930), 24-year-old Railway Guard, and his 23-year-old wife Annie (Suhan) Carney (1871-1943).[1][2]
Initially, the family lived in Broken Hill and by 1915 had relocated to Perth, Western Australia to work on the railway. Western Australia's rail was connected to the national rail network in October 1917 with the opening of the Trans-Australian railway through to Kalgoorlie. [2][3]
In both the 1916 and 1917 Electoral Rolls, Jack was living with his parents at 993 Hay Street, West Perth. Jack was working as an engine cleaner, and his father Thomas was working as a shunter.[4][5]
Jack enlisted in World War I on 13 March 1917. In the enlistment documents, he says he is a fireman and his father is listed as his next of kin. [6]
On 31 Oct 17 Jack departed Woolloomooloo, Sydney on transport ship HMAT Euripides.[6]

Jack disembarked when the vessel arrived in England on Boxing Day, 26 December 1917. He joined the Engineers and was stationed at Camp Parkhouse, the Australian Army Service Corps training camp on the Salisbury Plain. He remained there for the next three months until he departed for France on 17 April 1918.[6][7]

Unfortunately, on arriving in France in April 1918 he was almost immediately hospitalised for influenza and spent most of his first month in hospital.[6]
Jack returned to England in January 1919 and was granted furlough in London from 30 Jan 1919 to 13 Feb 1919. He did not return until 20 Feb 1919 and was charged with being absent without leave (AWL). He was required to forfeit 24 days of pay. [6]
Jack was again granted leave again from 27 February to 6 March 1919. [6]
3 weeks later Jack married Alice Campbell on Wednesday, April 16, 1919. He was reported absent without leave (AWL) again the following week, from 22 April to 30 April 1919 and was required to forfeit 16 days of pay! [6]
Alice and Jack returned to Australia on "S.S. Ceramic", arriving at Albany Port on 20 September 1919. [6]
