Biografi

Biography

Snaer was a giant, and represents a form of older natural deity that seems to be a personification of snow, and which is vaguely defined in Norse mythology.

He is, for example, the grandson of Kåre/Kári (wind gust) and the father of Torre (black frost), the daughters names represent different kinds of snow, all seem to be aspects of Snow's personification. He had two brothers, also nature gods, who represented fire and water (the sea).

In later accounts (in the 13th century) he is tried to be explained as one of the mythical Norwegian kings, besides also as a king in Kvenland (part of modern day Sweden and Finland).

Name(s)

Snærr, Snaer, Snjór would be the older spellings Swedish; Snö, Norwegian; Snø Litauiska: Snaeras Jokulo

He is also referred to as Snø den gamle, Snjór in gamli eller Snær in gamli, all meaning "the old" as his byname.

Parents and Family

According to Orknøyingenes saga written in the 13th century, he is the son of Froste (who is son of Kåre).

According to the text "Hversu Nóregr byggðist" from the Flateyjarbók (written abt. 1387-1394) he is the son of Jokul (who is son of Kåre). It also mentions that Snaer lived to be 300 years old.

No parents named in Ynglinga Saga [1]

Spouse(s) and Children

His wife is not mentioned in any of the sagas.

Both Orknøyingenes saga and Hversu Nóregr byggðist mentionhis son Torre. The later of the two also mentions daughters Fonn/Fǫnn, Mjoll/Mjǫll and Driva/Drífa.

Death and Burial

According to the text "Hversu Nóregr byggðist" from the Flateyjarbók (written abt. 1387-1394) Snaer lived to be 300 years old.

Research Notes

This profile represents a fictional/mythological/legendary person and the only reason for adding birth year is to give the profile pre-1500 protection and avoid database errors. The birth year 280 is based on father is assigned birth year 250.

Relationships between historical figures could have been simplified or even fabricated in the text to give the impression that succession remained within the same family….Precise chronology is also difficult to assess from the Sagas….The conclusion must be that the tight family network described in the Sagas is unlikely to be correct and that the relationships shown below should be treated with considerable caution

Jokulsdottir-1 and Jokulsson-2 appear to represent the same person because: Only one child of Jokul is mentioned in the sagas.
The Old-9 and Jokulsson-2 appear to represent the same person because: looking at this lineage, it appears that it is supposed to be the same one.
