After the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, Garrett's family fled to Ontario, Canada, for safety and settled in Raleigh Township. On June 7, 1874, he married Mary Josephine Harris in the Baptist Church at Buxton. At that time, he was a farmer.[2]
In 1881, Garrett was still living in Raleigh Township.[3]
He passed away in 1898 and donated his body to science. His body was donated to the University of Michigan Medical School. [4] According to his death certificate (viewable at Find A Grave), Garrett was living at the County (Poor) House at the time of his death in 1898. He was also widowed. The cause of death was Bright's Disease, which caused heart failure. He also had heart disease. [5][6]
