Charles was a longstanding and high ranking officer with the New Brunswick Regiment of Fencible Infantry, a unit which saw action in the War of 1812 particularly the Battle of Sackets Harbour]. The 104th was well known for it's trek from Fredericton, New Brunswick to Kingston, Ontario, a march that took 34 days over a 3 month period. The concept of a New Brunswick regiment defending Upper Canada from invaders foreshadowed Canadian confederation decades later, as it united the separate provinces of British North America together against a common enemy.
