William Henry Chism was born on October 10, 1843[1] in Tennessee.[2] His father moved the family to Arkansas. In 1850, he lived in Prairie Township, Newton County, Arkansas.[3]
When the Civil War started, he enlisted in the Union Army on July 19, 1863 in Jasper, Arkansas as a private. He was assigned to the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry, Company D.[2][4] The unit spent much of its time patrolling northern Arkansas to counter Confederate guerrillas and bandits who preyed on the local Union families. They proved successful in countering the rebels in the area. In the fall of 1864, the unit participated in the counter of Confederate General Sterling Price's Missouri Raid. The only Arkansas Union regiment to do so from start to finish. Apart from the patrols and skirmishes, they performed other important duties, such as escorting supply trains and guarding military posts.[5] At the end of the war, he mustered out on August 20, 1865.[6]
After the war, he lived in Griffin Township, Conway County, Arkansas. He lived with his brother Pleasant and his family. He worked as a farm laborer to earn a living.[7] William married Nancy Elizabeth Wells on September 5, 1872 in Conway County, Arkansas.[8]
In 1880, he lived in Gregory Township, Conway County, Arkansas. He continued to work as a farmer to earn a living.[9] In 1900, he lived in Nichols Township in the same county. He rented his home and worked as a farm manager.[10]
William died on April 15, 1909[2] in Conway County, Arkansas. He was buried at Mount Vernon Cemetery in Conway County, Arkansas.[1]
