  • Fact: http://familysearch.org/v1/LifeSketch US Congressman. Confederate Congressman. An 1848 graduate of Emory and Henry College in Virginia, he studied law, was admitted to the bar, and established a legal practice in Bedford, Virginia. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates and was a member of the Virginia succession convention. During the Civil War, he served as a colonel in the Confederate Army and was a Congressman in the First and Second Confederate Congresses. He moved to Norfolk, Virginia, following the war and was elected as a Democrat to Congress in 1874. He served from 1875 to 1881, and was appointed Solicitor General of the United States by President Grover Cleveland, serving from 1885 to 1886. He resumed the practice of law in Norfolk and Washington, D. C., and was president of the Virginia State Bar Association in 1898.
