Biography

John was born about 17 Mar 1754 in Bedford, Bedford County, Virginia. He was the son of Joseph Payne and Phoebe Offill and was mentioned in his father's will in 1803. He passed away in 14 Sep 1839 in Sumner County, Tennessee. [1]

John married Elizabeth Litt about 1774, probably while living in Botetourte, Virginia. It is believed that they had the following children:

  3. Elizabeth "Betsy" Payne was born in Virginia about 1777
  4. Phoebe Payne was born in Virginia about 1779

  6. Warren Larkin Payne was born in Virginia about 1785
  7. Sarah "Sally" Payne was born in Virginia about 1787
  8. Nancy Payne was born in Virginia about 1789
  9. Simpson Payne was born in Virginia about 1790
  10. Joseph Payne was born in Tennessee about 1793
  11. John Thomas Payne was born in Tennessee about 1795
  12. Simpson Payne was born in Tennessee about 1796
  13. Phebe Payne Vaught was born in Tennessee about 1800
  14. Rebecca Payne Bailey was born in Tennessee about 1803
  15. Theodocia "Dorsha" Payne was born in Tennessee about 1806

John enlisted in the military during the Revolutionary War in Bedford County, Virginia, for two years on 9th Feb 1776. [2]

John moved from Virginia and settled in Tennessee about 1793s. He was living in Sumner, Tennessee in 1820[3]
