Biography

Leah (McCaleb) Whitehead was born in Appalachia, in Alabama.

Leah Catherine McCaleb was born in Brown, Fayette County, Alabama on 18 July 1892. She was the daughter of Miles H.M. McCaleb and Barsheba Susan Ann McCaleb. The 1900 Census confirms the relationships.

In 1900, Leah was a school girl of seven living on her parent's farm along with her siblings Ola (15); Felix (11); Eva (5); Miles (3); and Susella (1). A farm hand, Thomas Tucker also lived on the farm and helped the family.^[1]

On 29 September, 1909 Leah married Charles Wheeler Whitehead in Brown, Fayette County, Alabama.^[2] Some people called him Charlie, but to me he was always Uncle Wheeler.

Charley and Leah were living on a farm on the Fayette Road in Brown in 1910.^[3]

Two sons were born in the next decade. Garland was born in 1911 and Birvel was born in 1914.^[4]

The 1930 Census shows the Whitehead family living in Walker County, Alabama. They owned the home. ^[5]

The 1940 Census offers a better location for the Whitehead home. They were living in the little town of Kansas in Walker County, Alabama. No additional children were born to them.^[6]

Leah passed away on 2 August 1990. She was laid to rest in the Winfield City Cemetery, Winfield, Marion County, Alabama.^[7]
