He moved with his parents from Ohio to Iowa and was recorded with them in the 1850 census of Bloomington Township, Muscatine County, Iowa.[3] He was married in Iowa to Elizabeth M. Sumner[2][5] in November 1854.[5]
"He was a founding figure of Omaha, Nebraska, serving as the first deputy surveyor of the Nebraska Territory, on the first Omaha City Council, and as a member of the first Nebraska Territorial Legislature.
William's family was officially one of the "first families of Colorado" as they were recorded living in the city of Denver on 22 Aug 1860 when it was still in Arapahoe County in Kansas Territory - before the formation of Colorado Territory in 1861.[4]

He died in Denver city in 1903,[2] survived by Elizabeth, and was buried at Fairmount Cemetery[2] in Denver City, Denver County, Colorado.

Their children were Wm Newton born 2-22-1831, Ann Eliza 1-7-1833, Olivia Martin 1-26-1835, Rachel Jane 12-7-1838, James Henry 9-27-1844. The latter was wounded at seige [sic] of Vicksburg May 14 and died at Atlanta Aug-14-1863. Aged 18 yr. 10 mo. + 18 da."
