Mary Lonie was born about August 27, 1826 in Temple, Edinburghshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, daughter of Andrew Lonie (1801–1864) and Christina Neil ( –1865). Mary was baptised on 27 August 1826 in Temple, Edinburghshire, Scotland.[1]
Temple (Scottish Gaelic: Baile nan Trodach) is a village and civil parish in Midlothian, Scotland. Situated to the south of Edinburgh, the village lies on the east bank of the river South Esk. The name "Temple" refers to its historical connection to the Knights Templar. In 1237, the town name was recorded as "Ballentrodoch", from the Scottish Gaelic Baile nan Trodach, which means "town of the warriors", again a reference to the Knights Templar.
In 1128, Hugues de Payens, the first Grand Master, met with David I in Scotland and was granted the lands of Balantrodach. In 1128, the Council of Troyes formally recognized the Order. Balantrodach became their principal Templar seat and preceptory in Scotland until the suppression of the order between 1307 and 1312.[2]
Medieval Old Kirk in Temple (1300s) |
The current building is not the first to be built on this site. The Knights Templar built a monastery and church (dedicated to the Virgin Mary) here. Masonry dating from the 12thcentury was reused at a later date for rebuilding. The current Old Kirk dates from the 1300s and was probably built by the Knights of St John (Hospitallers), as they were given almost all of the Templar properties after the dissolution of the Templar Order.[3]
In the 17th century, this area was known as “Clerkington” or the “Priest’s Town”. The land was sold to the Primrose family and made by charter in 1695 into a new Barony of Rosebery. Rosebery House lies to the west of the village adjacent to the steading of c.1805 with its clock tower and doocot. It is currently a holiday let and reception centre.[4] A doocot or dovecote was a structure for keeping doves or pidgeons for food, eggs and dung. [5]
