Biography

NOTE: Thomas Nathaniel Edwards Jr. was first identified in the newsletters of the Edwards Heirs Association in 1925, but has no connection to the Thomas Edwards who died in Orangeburg Co., SC in 1787, as is often claimed. Keep in mind, this information is connected to the "Edwards Fortune" fraud and it is likely that no one named "Thomas Nathaniel Edwards" from Wales ever existed during this time period.

The relevant text reads:

"Thomas, from whom we descend, was born in Wales. England. July 7, 1723; came to America in 1760. He married his first cousin. The surviving child, Rhoda. married John Stiles of Nelson County. Kentucky: some of her children are yet living. A son who is in his 84th year from whom valuable information has been obtained in regards to the Edwards Estate.

"Thomas lived near Lebanon until his death: his remains then were put to rest in the old Presbyterian Cemetery: his wife, yet surviving, went to her daughter. Rhoda's. to live, and after her death was buried on John Stiles' farm in Nelson County, Kentucky."

"The names of Thomas Edward’s children are: Elkanah, born 1761; died 1855. Josiah, born 1779; died 1851. John, born 1781; died 1888. Stouten, born 1782; died 1855. Joseph, born 1785; died 1881. A second genealogist in "Edwards Heirs" also references another Thomas Edwards of North Carolina:

"One Thomas Edwards lived in North Carolina and married Elizabeth Nickols. their children were: (1) Robert Edwards, born 1743. (2) William Edwards, born 1745. (3) Thomas Edwards, born 1747. (4) Sarah (Sallie) 1750. (5) Andrew in 1752."

"The above Thomas Edwards, Jr., born 1723. married Elizabeth Nicholas A. D. 1743 and their issue was as follows-: J Robert Edwards. Jr., born A. D. 1743. I William Edwards, born A. D. 1745. j Thomas Edwards, born A. D. 1747. Sara Edwards, born A. D. 1750. Andrew Edwards, born A. D. 1752."

Both of these were claimed to be "Thomas Nathaniel Edwards Jr."

There was a Thomas Edwards who died in Kentucky in 1810; this is supported by documentation: https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I092815&tree=Tree1

NOTE: In 1880 census of Nelson Co., KY, this man's daughter, Rhoda (Edwards) STILES says her father was born in Virginia.

The Edwards Heirs scammers may have grafted records for real people named Thomas Edwards onto this likely fictitious identity "Thomas Nathaniel Edwards Jr." to connect unwitting victims to their scam. It is doubtful such a person existed, and thus no records can be solidly tied to him.

  • Fact: http://familysearch.org/v1/LifeSketch Thomas Nathaniel Edwards Jr. was first identified in the newsletters of the Edwards Heirs Association in 1925, but has no connection to the Thomas Edwards who died in Orangeburg Co., SC in 1787, as is often claimed. Edwards-25270 and Edwards-29999 appear to represent the same person because: Hi! There is already a Thomas Nathaniel Edwards Jr. in this family, born the same year. Since they cannot possibly be two different people, we have to merge these profiles. Alternately, if you want to reject the merge, please unlink Edwards 29999 from these parents. Thanks!

This man is probably the son of Thomas Edwards of Westmoreland and Prince William Counties, Virginia. He wrote his will in June 1774 naming his children as Thomas, William, Mary Sargent and Franky Edwards. I will look into this later. See: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Edwards-25427

Conflicting data: This profile lists Thomas' first wife as Elizabeth NICHOLAS; The Edwards Heirs Association lists wife as first cousin, Elizabeth DENT; and the hyperlink you provide to Early Colonial Settlers of Southern Maryland and Virginia's Northern Neck Counties lists wife as Elizabeth TURNER

So, maddeningly, two different men were claimed to be Thomas Nathaniel Edwards Jr in Edwards Heirs-- I have included text for both now. Made other edits. Thanks for finding that Virginia reference. I personally don't think any of these people were from Wales, or that TNE ever existed, so I'm happy to have real information.

Edwards-25270 and Edwards-25776 appear to represent the same person because: these both contain vital info from the "Edwards Heirs" newsletters of the 1920s. They do represent the same person. We should merge them and we can note any conflicting information in the bio
