Piers / Peter de Lutegareshale took his surname from his forester of Ludgershall, Wiltshire, under Henry II. He married Maud_____. His second son Geoffrey was a favorite of King Henry II, King Richard and King John who belted him as the Earl of Essex. [1]
Maud's second husband was dead by 1175, so Peter had died long before that date. His son, the Earl, had his remains moved to St. Swithin's in Winchester and re-interred on 8 May 1198. The date often seen for his death is 14 Jan 1179/80 which is obviously an error. [2]
He was from a modest landowning family that had a tradition of service in mid-ranking posts under Henry II. His son Geoffrey's elder brother Simon Fitz Peter was at various times High Sheriff of Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire, and Bedfordshire. His son Geoffrey, too, got his start in this way, as High Sheriff of Northamptonshire for the last five years of Henry II's reign. [3]
Son Goeffrey m1. Beatrice de Say, daughter of William de Say and heiress of the Mandeville Earls of Essex. m2. Aveline de Clare, daughter of Roger de Clare, 2nd Earl of Hertfordshire.

As for his son Geoffrey being a favorite of King Henry II, King Richard and King John who belted him as the Earl of Essex-this ISN'T what Cawley said. Cawley states- King John gave "comitatum Estsexiae to "Galfrido filio Petri" the day of his coronation "VI Kal Jul" 1199. Meaning King John in July 1199 gave the county of Essex to Geoffrey son of Peter. Of course he was a favorite of King John.
PETER de Ludgershall, son of --- (-Winchester 11--, bur 8 May 1198 Winchester, Church of St Swithin). "Gaufridus filius Petri comes Essex" donated property to Winchester St Swithin, for the anniversaries of "…Petri de Lutegareshale patris mei…et Mathildis matris mee…et sponsarum mearum Beatricis et Aveline et liberorum meorum" by undated charter[749]. He became a monk at Winchester before he died[750]. The Annals of Winchester record that “Gaufridus filius Petri” transferred the body of “patrem suum” to Winchester[751].
