Biography

Alice was born in about 1819 either in Montreal (according to her death certificate, which lists her husband as Edward, not Andrew and thus may not be trustworthy) or in Ireland.

She married Andrew William Crawford on 28 July 1840 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.[1]

Their first few children were born in Canada: Mary Ann (~1841), Thomas (~1845), Alice (~1846), Andrew William (~1847), and Maria (~1850).

The family moved from Montréal to Boston sometime after their daughter Maria was born (about 1850) and before their son John was born (about 1852).

Several additional children were born in Boston: John (~1852), Elizabeth/Catherine (1854), and George (~1861).

In 1855 at age 35, she lived in Boston with her husband (38, born in Ireland, a porter) and children Mary Ann (14, born in Canada), Thomas (10, born in Canada), Alice (9, born in Canada), Andrew William (8, born in Canada), Maria (5, born in Canada), John (3, born in Massachusetts), and Elizabeth (8 months, born in Massachusetts). This record says that she was born in Ireland.[2]

In 1860 at age 38, she lived in Boston (12th Ward) with her husband (43, born in Ireland, a porter) and children Thomas (15, born in Canada), Alice (14, born in Canada), Maria (10, born in Canada), John (7, born in Massachusetts), and Elizabeth (6, born in Massachusetts). This record says that she was born in Ireland, and notes that she cannot read or write.[3]

In 1865 at age 46, she lived in Boston with her husband (48, born in Ireland and a porter) and children Thomas (20, born in Canada), Alice (18, born in Canada), Maria (14, born in Canada), John (12, born in Massachusetts), Elizabeth (10, born in Massachusetts), and George (4, born in Massachusetts). This record says that she was born in Canada.[4]

In 1870 at age 48, she lived in South Boston (Ward 7) with her husband (54, a porter born in Ireland) and children Thomas (24, born in Canada, clerk at a carpet store), Maria (20, born in Canada, a rug? maker), John (17, born in Massachusetts, "app. upholsterer"), Lizzie (14, born in Mass.), and George (8, born in Mass.; misindexed as "Ginge"), plus daughter Alice Crawford Higgins (22, born in Canada) and her husband Joseph Higgins (23, a wood carver born in Mass.) and their daughter Menia, age 2.[5]

In 1880 at age 60, she lived in South Boston at 512 Fourth Street with her husband (63, born in Ireland) and children John (26, a produce merchant), Elizabeth (24, a school teacher), and George A. (17, clerk in a store). This record says that she and her parents were born in Canada.[6]

In 1900 at age 81, she was widowed and lived in South Boston at 3 Robin Hood Street with her son George (37, a bookkeeper for a bank) and a servant, Annie Moran. This record states that she and her parents were born in Canada, and she immigrated in 1860 (though it was definitely earlier than that, see above), and that Annie Moran immigrated in 1896. It does not list her (or Annie) as being naturalized.[7]

She passed away in Boston in 1906 at age 87 years, 11 months, 9 days.[8]

Research Notes

Based on DNA evidence, she appears to be related to Hugh Gray and Mary Gray of Quebec; her parents may be Patrick Grey and Ann Brady. Research is in progress. Alice's marriage record and death record do not list her parents.

She is listed in the records of several of her children:

Birth record for Catherine Crawford, b. 28 Oct 1854 in Boston[9] [NOTE: This may actually be their daughter Elizabeth, who was 8 months old in the 1855 census. There are no further records for Catherine.]
