Eliphaz Chapman was born in 1747. He was the son of Samuel Chapman (1706-1795) and Hannah York (1705-1760).
Eliphaz married Hannah Jackman in 1772. Their children were:
He studied for the ministry under Moses Bradford of Methuen. He preached in Madbury and Methuen for about 15 years and owned a small farm in Methuen. (Madbury is in NH and Methuen just over the border in MA).
He relocated to Bethel, (now Maine) in 1789. He purchased a farm in Bethel on the north side of the river, where his son Timothy later lived. They were some of the earliest settlers in that community, and he is credited with giving it the name Bethel. He did not preach regularly at any church in Bethel, but occasionally filled pulpits in the surrounding community. He was chosen as the first representative from Bethel to the Massachusetts legislature in 1808. He worked as a Justice of the Peace.
He passed away in 1814, of consumption. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Bethel, Maine.
Various family trees and local histories record a first marriage to Sarah Hutchins, who died without children before he married Hannah Jackman in 1772. But no dates are given so this will need further research.
