Biography

Prudence is the daughter of William Goulstone and Billah Wright. She was born about 1782. The exact year is uncertain as her age on census records is not consistent. The estimate of her birth year is taken from the age provided (84) on both her death record at the UK Government Records Office (GRO) and her burial record in the parish register. No birth record has yet been found. and it is assumed that she is the daughter of William and Billah as she has clearly come to Carmarthen with them

Prior to her Marriage to Joseph Lewis on the 6th November 1808 at St Peter's parish Church in Carmarthen, Prudence had two base children. The first with John Ely named Louisa Arabella born 25th June 1804 and baptised at St Peter's on the 5th October 1804. The second with Edward Davies named Justina Elizabeth born on the 16th Nov 1806 and baptised at St Peter's, 14 March1807.

Nothing further has been found about these two children.

Following her marriage Joseph and Prudence had a further seven children that have been identified as follows:-

4. Joseph Lewis born 20 October 1814
5. Charles David Lewis born 6 May 1817

Prudence can be found in the census returns for 1841, 1851 and 1861 living in Woods Row Carmarthen. Her occupation is given as a "painter". Prudence has clearly been economical with the truth as in 1851 her age is recorded as 62 and ten years later in 1861 her age is recorded as 66.

Prudence died in January of 1866 at the age of 84 as recorded in both her death record at the GRO and her burial record at St David's parish church in Carmarthen. The burial record states her abode as Woods Row which is consistent with her address on the previous two census records.
