Biography

Arent was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church of Schenectady, New York, on 26 July 1702, recorded as a child of Jonohthan Stevens and Lea Stevens. Witnesses to the baptism were Manus Vedder and Susanna Van Slyk. Arent's father was baptized that same day as an adult, age 27.[1]

Arent Stevens, son of Jonathan, married first, Maritie, dau. of Willem Hall, Feb. 3, 1726; she d. Dec. 23, 1739, in her 42d year; he married secondly, Mary Griffiths, wid. of Lieut. Thomas Burrows, Feb. 4, 1749/50; she d. July 2, 1794, a. 75ys.; he d. May 15, 1758. Arent Stevens, for more than 20 years before his death, acted as an Indian interpreter, and was often employed by Sir William Johnson in negoçiations [sic] with the different tribes. He owned lands, and for some time resided at Canajoharie. Children b:
