Cordan Amos Lowell (1861 - 1930)

The have always been interested in my Lowell family heritage as far back to my childhood. My father (John Stanley Lowell) would always tell me "Know who you are and where you come from", "you're a Lowell, don't forget that". Of course, growing up in Massachusetts being a Lowell was a big thing, back in the 1800's and the turn of the century. Sometime in 1992 I drove my father and grandfather out to a cemetery in Sutton NH. My grandfather wanted to find his father's grave. We searched and we found the headstone of Amos Kezar Lowell and his wife Caroline Kent. I had assumed at that time that Amos K Lowell was my great grandfather. As there were no other Lowell headstones that I saw. I thought that because Amos died in 1928 that my grandfather was a change of life baby or the son of his sister Grace (Lowell) Anderson as she was 18 years his older. Was I wrong! My father was not pleased by my assumption. Fast forward to 2005. Still believing Grace was my grandfather's "biological" mother I started my family genealogy of the Lowell's. I found Rev. Delmar R. Lowell's book "The historical genealogy of the Lowell's of America" published in 1899. I used Amos K. Lowell as my starting point as I had more information on him. Because it was published in 1899 my grandfather Paul V Lowell was not in the book. However, his sister Grace and his grandparents Amos & Carrie were. That is how I found my real great grandfather Cordon Amos Lowell and his 2 wives. I've been putting the puzzle pieces together since then. Interestingly Cordon has his birthplace listed as Greensboro, VT on most records. For some reason he had lied about this and I can only assume the reasons why. According to Rev. Delmar Lowell's book Cordon was born in Hatley, Stanstead, Quebec, Canada also on a few census records but not all. I found records of him being born in Canada in my world explorer membership on ancestry.com. I have also spoken to the Town Clerk in Greensboro, VT, and he said there is no record of a Cordon Lowell and to check with the State Capitol Montpellier. I checked with Montpelier, Vt and they also have no record. This is what has led me to believe that Cordon was actually born in Canada, WHY did he lie? We will never know.
