Biography

Rachel Cushing was born on March 21, 1781 in Scituate, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. [1] She was the daughter of George Cushing and Lydia Cushing Cushing.

An intention to marry was published on January 2, 1802 for Pickels Cushing, Jr. and Rachel Cushing, both of Scituate. They were married on January 24, 1802 in Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts. [2] [3] Rachel and Pickels, Jr. were first cousins. Rachel's father, George Sr. was the elder brother of Pickels Jr.'s father, Pickels Sr. Pickels was a widower with three children. His first wife Ruth Cushing had died in 1801 and was a first cousin to both Pickels and Rachel.

Rachel's father died on September 4, 1814 and his bequest to Rachel was "to my daughter Rachel Cushing, one hundred and twenty dollars", [4]

The family remained in Scituate and in the 1810 U.S. Census [5] the family consisted of two sons and four daughters.

In the 1820 U. S. Census the family was in Scituate. [6] Pickels was engaged in agriculture. There was one son under ten and five daughters in the household.

In the 1830 U. S. Census the family was still in Scituate. [7] Pickels was over sixty (61) and the only male in the household. There were five daughters.

In the 1840 U. S. Census the family remained in Scituate. [8] Pickels was over seventy and there were no other adult males in the family but the record indicates one person was involved in agriculture. There was a male under five and one between five and nine. These were likely the children of his daughter, Harriet Litchfield, who had died in 1838. Rachel was listed between fifty and fifty-nine. There were two other grown daughters in the household.

Pickels wrote a will on June 4, 1841 in Scituate. [9] At that time all three of his sons had died. The only one who had offspring was (I believe) William, who left a son William. There were five living daughters; Ruth Dill, Mary Cushing, Julia Messenger, Eliza Barker, and Lydia H (or K). Cushing and three grandchildren. The grandchildren were William Cushing, the son of William and the children of Harriett: Albert C. Litchfield, and George W. Litchfield. He named Rachel as the executrix of the estate and left to her the use of the estate for the remainder of her life. After her death Mary, who had not married, was to receive fifty percent of the estate including the house and a barn. The other half was to be divided into seven parts with each of the five daughters receiving one share. The last two sevenths was to be divided equally between the three grandchildren.

Pickels Cushing, Junior died on April 21, 1842 in Hanson, Plymouth, Massachusetts. [10]

On June 7, 1842 Rachel posted bond and was appointed executrix of Pickel's estate. [11]

In the 1850 U. S. Census (3 September 1850) [12] Rachel's home was listed as being in South Scituate. She was listed as sixty-one years old. Also in the household was her daughter Mary who was forty-seven years old, and sixteen year old Albert C. Litchfield who attended school. Albert was the son of Rachel's daughter, Harriet Cushing Litchfield. He and his brother George Ward Litchfield were the two young boys listed in the 1840 U. S. Census. George had died of "brain fever" in 1844 at the age of eight. [13]

In the 1855 Massachusetts State Census, only Mary and Rachel were in the household. [14]

In the 1860 U. S. Census (16 July 1860) Rachel and Mary were the only people in the household and still living in South Scituate. [15] Rachel was eighty years old with real estate valued at $2100 and personal estate valued at $700. Mary was fifth-six, with a personal estate of $1000 and worked as a "common school" teacher.

Rachael (sic) Cushing died in South Scituate of old age. She was e eighty-seven years old.[16]

Geography

Rachel's family lived in Scituate, Hanover, and South Scituate but probably never moved. The town of Scituate was incorporated on October 5, 1636. In 1717, the western part of the original land grant was separated and incorporated as the town of Hanover. in 1849 a western section became the town of South Scituate. That section later changed its name to Norwell. [17]
