2nd Lt John Babcock served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: May 15,1861
Mustered out: April 1865
Side: CSA
Regiment(s): Company F, 5th Regiment, Alabama Infantry

John Babcock was born on October 20, 1844 in Cahaba, Dallas, Alabama, United States. His parents were Joseph Babcock and Ann Curtis. He married Virginia Parnell on October 20, 1875 He married Alice Deseker on April 20, 1880 He died on May 23, 1917 in Selma, Dallas, Alabama, United States

As a boy, John Babcock ran afoul of the local Minister, Rev. James L. Cotten, as excerpts from the Minister's journal [1] show. Cotten wrote :

In an attempt to correct John Babcock [age 11] he resisted and cursed me. I put him out of the door. His mother sent him to the other room...Nov. 27 1849
John Babcock is a bad boy. This school is not under good discipline and this town is not a good place to raise children. A Dancing Master is in town trying to make up a Dancing school. Hope he will fail... Nov. 19, 1849

Cotten went on to marry John's aunt and many years later John Babcock was called to the Supreme Court of Alabama to give witness as to John's grandfather's opinion of Reverend Cotten. John testified he had often heard his grandfather curse Cotton bitterly. His words lent legitimacy to grandfather's sanity when cutting Cotten out of his Will.

An approximate birth year for John of 1838 can be gleaned from the 1850 US Census, though the 1860 US Census suggest he was born in 1841, and other records may show even later dates such as 1844. [2]
