Edwin Lord Weeks is born October 9, 1848 is born Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States. He is a son of Stephen Pickering Weeks and Mary Lord.[1][2]
As a young man Weeks visits the Florida Keys to draw, and also travels to Suriname in South America. His earliest known paintings dates from 1867 when he is eighteen years old..
In 1872 Weeks relocates to Paris, becoming a pupil of Léon Bonnat and Jean-Léon Gérôme.
After his studies in Paris, Weeks emerges as one of America's major painters of Orientalist subjects. Throughout his adult life he is an inveterate traveler and journeys to South America (1869), Egypt and Persia (1870), Morocco (frequently between 1872 and 1878), and India (1882–83).
He marries Frances Rollins Hale September 12, 1877 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States.[3]
In 1895 Weeks writes and illustrates a book of travels, From the Black Sea through Persia and India, and in 1897 he publishes Episodes of Mountaineering.
Edwin dies November 16, 1903 in Paris, Île-de-France, France.
