Biography

George was born in September 1827[1], likely in Greene County, GA (as his father was listed on the 1820 and 1830 Greene County census, 1825 Tax List, and was also listed in newspaper accounts in the late 1820s in that area. In 1838, his father Jesse was on the Tax List in Muscogee County, GA, listed with his brother David Mann, and near another brother, Henry Mann. George's parents moved to Meriwether County, GA by 1840. In the early 1840s, his father Jesse Mann moved to Jackson County, GA, where he remarried to Nancy Carlisle and had 2 daughters.

George Mann's father Jesse was born around 1790 in Edgefield County, SC, very shortly after the family moved there from southern Virginia. George's grandfather, Millington Mann, served in the Revolutionary War in 1777 and early 1778, with at least one hospitalization in Pennsylvania during the winter. The birth family of Millington Mann's wife Elizabeth has not been identified as of 2023. This Mann family, by Y-DNA, estate records, and other DNA analysis, has been traced directly back to Robert and Isabel Mann of Henrico County, VA, who were first found there in 1677.

Prior to the 1850 Census of Monroe County (Division 60), George had become a farm laborer on the farm of his future father in law Rev. John Mullins. George ultimately married 2 of his daughters. This area was known as Unionville for many decades, and now is in northeastern Lamar County.

Alfred M Mann, a younger brother of George, was also a farm laborer at a nearby farm of John T Collier in the same Division 60 of Monroe County. In the early 1850s, Alfred was also listed on the Tax List with George's neighbors Joseph Carter, who was the maternal grandfather of George's wife Nancy.

Once George W Mann settled in Monroe County, he lived there the remainder of his life, excluding service time in the Civil War. He married Nancy Carter Mullins 16 December 1851 in Monroe County, GA [2]

After the death of his first wife, George married her widowed sister, Martha. Late in life, he married Susannah (Susie) Jackson, and also joined the High Shoals Primitive Baptist Church, which was a few miles from his home. He had 3 children with Susie, though one died as an infant. He passed away in 1901 and was buried in the Carter/Mann cemetery in what is now northern Lamar County, GA. His last known farm house sits on the corner of Mann Rd, unoccupied and not in great condition.

Further proof of this family info comes from the Griffin, GA newspaper, which twice (around the early 1900s) reported in its social columns that descendants of George visited with their Meriwether County cousins, who were descendants of George's oldest brother Joel Mann of that county.
