Biography

Birth

George Hawkins Beilby was born on 11 February 1877 at No. 9 Darling Street, South Yarra, Victoria, Australia. He was the son of Walter George Beilby, who was not present at the birth, a Bank Clerk (born Yorkshire, England) and Emily Nation (born London, England). [1] [2]

Birth Record for George Hawkins Beilby

George received his middle name from his father's stepfather, William Hawkins, who married his grandmother Fanny Simpson after her first husband, Robert Beilby a Store Keeper, died of dysentery on 3 January 1860 after they arrived in Australia in 1858 on the Young America.

Funeral notice of George's father's step father.

Marriage

He married Amy Jane Wyeth on 9 November 1904 at Holy Trinity Church, Coburg, Melbourne, Australia. They were married by the Rev. J. Caton, Vicar. George Hawkins was noted as the eldest son of Walter Beilby, South Yarra and Amy Jane as the eldest daughter of J. G. T. Wyeth, W.A.[3][4]

George and Amy were photographed together, before they were married, on The Ripple. George is playing the harmonica (bottom left) and Amy is smiling happily beside him. Amy's siblings Fred, Jim, George and Emily are in the photo too. Also refer Research Notes.

Amy went on to marry again. Her marriage to Leopold Septimus Knoblauch was registered in 1928. They were not together for very long and when Leopold died 3 years later in 1931 (about 48 years old) he was buried in an unmarked grave which is now under a tree.[5][6] When Amy died 3 years later in 1934, aged 48, her death and probate records show she was still legally married to Leopold when he died. However from her children's point of view they believed her to have been divorced[7] which probably explains why he was buried unceremoniously and why her first marriage name of Beilby was used by her children for her death announcement in the newspaper and for her burial headstone.[8][9][10][11][12][13]

Children

George and Amy had the following children;[14][7]

  1. George Walter Beilby (1905-1986) known as father by his younger siblings after the death of their father, which is also recorded on his own headstone plaque. Died 81 years old.[15][16]
  2. James Cleeve Beilby (1906-1991) known as Jid and recorded as Cleeve on his father's headstone plaque. Died 85 years old.[17]
  3. Leonard Oliver Beilby (1910-1987) Lenard on his father's headstone plaque. Died 77 years old.[18]
  4. Marjorie Beilby (1912-1987) Emily's twin, Margery on her father's headstone plaque, and her own headstone plaque. Died 75 years old.[19][20]
  5. Emily Beilby (1912-1959) Marjorie's twin. Died 47 years old.[21]
  6. Geoffrey Owen Beilby (1914-1999) Died 85 years old.[22]
  7. Amy Estella Beilby (1918-1985) known as Estella Amy during her life as recorded on her father's headstone plaque, and her own headstone plaque. Died 67 years old.[23]
  8. Fanny Jane Beilby (1920-2015) was born on 21 September 1920, six months after her father sadly died. Fanny changed her name to Janet in 1942[7] which is recorded on her father's headstone plaque and her marriage registration in England. The timing of her name change is evidenced between her mother's death in 1934, as she is shown as Fanny in the newspaper death notice,[12] and her marriage in 1951 where her name is recorded as Janet.[24][25] She died on 27 April 2015 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Died 95 years old.[7]

Death and Burial

George died on 29 March 1920, shortly after his 43 birthday, at the Woorayl private hospital in Leongatha, Victoria, Australia, after an operation for an acute attack of appendicitis. It was recorded in the Great Southern Advocate on 1 April 1920 that "the deceased gentleman (late of Koonwarra-road, Leongatha) had a large circle of friends, and much sympathy is felt for his wife and family in their sad bereavement".[26][27] He was buried at Leongatha Cemetery which is now part of the South Gippsland Shire, Victoria, Australia. The records suggest he was not buried until June 1920 but the reason is unknown.[28][14]

Will and Probate

George made a nuncupative will which was witnessed by Ethel Maud Bone, Proprietress of Woorigal Hospital, Leongatha and Irene Frances Moody, Nurse Latrobe Street Cheltenham.[29] [30]

"My Will, Made twenty seventh day of March Ninteen Twenty. My last will and testament. I leave each child its own pony. My wife to carry on any way she may wish. But if sold children to have their share with her. The working bullocks and waggan to be left to wife."

Notification of Probate was published in The Age on 7 November 1920:

WILLS AND ESTATES. George Hawkins Beilby, late of Koonwarra-road, Leongatha, farmer, who died on 29th March, by his will of 27th March, 1920, left £35 real estate and £2677 personally to his widow and children. [31][32]

Probate was then granted on 27 November 1920. The grant was "made upon the condition that no portion of the assets shall be distributed or paid during the war to any beneficiary or credit who is a German, Austro-Hungarian, Turkish, or Bulgarian subject wherever resident or to any one on behalf or to or on behalf of any person resident in Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey or Bulgaria of whatever nationality,. without the express sanction of the Crown and if any distribution or payment is made contrary to this condition the Grant of Probbate will be forth-with revoked."

Research Notes

  • The Inverloch Historical Society Inc has a copy of the photo of George Beilby and Amy Wyeth on The Ripple on its website. It is dated 1908 however this cannot be correct as George and Amy were married in 1904 and Amy is noted with her maiden name on the website. Further, the date recorded on the back of an original version of the photo in the possession of Susan (Potter) Officer is 1 January 1903. Emma Wyeth is also noted as being in the photo. This is presumably Emily who was known by the family as Aunt Em - easily mistaken by others to be Emma rather than correctly as Emily. We know who George and Amy are because of the arrows at the bottom of the photo notated by George and Amy's daughter-in-law Frances Mabel (Henderson) Beilby (1906-2000). But it is not known who the third female is, nor can each of Amy's siblings be pinpointed unfortunately. Potter-10870 16:12, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
  • George's brother, Eric Nation Beilby of "St. Fellan" Crisp Street, Hampton in the State of Victoria Architect made an oath that George was born at Number thirteen Darling Street South Yarra, however, his Birth record clearly shows it to be 9 Darling Street.[30] Potter-10870 16:12, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
