Biography

Jamestown Church Tower
Francis Chamberlain was a Jamestown colonist.
flag of the Jamestowne Society
Came to the Colonies (Virginia) in 1621 on the Marmaduke.[1] Wife is listed as Rebecca by 1624 in Elizabeth City, Virginia muster rolls.[2] He has a young son named Francis, age 3 listed as well.[3]

"Francis Chamberlain, presumably father of Thomas, Edmond and William, was the first to settle in the colonies. He came on the Marmaduke in 1621 and John Camden Hotten's Original Lists, p. 254, shows him at Elizabeth City, Virginia, in the "muster roll" taken 7 Feb 1624/5, age 45, with wife Rebecca aged 37, small son Francis aged 3, and four servants. Significantly, his household was next-but-one to that of Daniel Cookins [sic] who was the Daniel Gookin later leading the boatload of Puritan refugees fleeing Indian raids and landing at Boston in 1644, presumably with Thomas and William Chamberlain and others unnamed. The marriage of a Francis Chamberlain to Agnes Haiden in 1613/4 at Ugley, co. Essex, England, may have pertained to him.[2]

Francis Chamberlain and Agnes Hayden. 1580 Francis Chamberlain was born, I presume, in England. Francis contributed to our family gene pool a sense of adventure, entrepreneurship and bold risk taking. His connection, as father of Thomas, Edmond and William, is based on circumstantial evidence and can not be proved. However, unlike other prominent Chamberlain American immigrants, his connection can not be disproved. [4]

As a burgess, he was a Member of the Convention of 1625[5] and a signer of that Convention's Petition to the King.[6][7]

Does it make sense that Francis would sail to settle in Virginia in 1621 and leave behind his three young sons, ages about 6, 5, and 3? Then to have a wife Rebecca and with son Francis age 3 in 1624/25? Where were his children? Wife Rebecca would have either been with him in 1621 or shortly there after. Leave his three young sons behind with their mother? Even if the mother had died, would he have left them behind?

The tree found by Frank Leach does not make sense either-- Francis and Agnes Haiden Chamberlain in Boston in 1621, but their young children still in England, and she dies in 1621, and Francis dies in 1623 in Boston. Would a mother really have left her infant son (William) and young boys behind in England?

While this looks right here, Francis is father of Thomas, I have found another possible father of Thomas as another Thomas born abt 1568 in England. I'll try to sort this out soon, but I do like this version better.

The following site has great information on Francis as well as DNA support that the brothers are his sons.

Francis arrived in Virginia in the "Marmaduke" in 1621. His second wife, Rebecca, arrived in "Bona Nova" in 1622. It is very unlikely that Francis's first wife Agnes Haiden could have died in Billerica, Middlesex, Massachusetts in 1621 as shown in the posted profile,

Sources state that "surely" Francis was father of Thomas Chamberlain but no proof. Researcher David C. Chamberlain states: "It would be nice and neat to connect these three men (Thomas, Edmund, and William Chamberlain) to Francis Chamberlain but there is simply no evidence. First, Francis was in Elizabeth City, VA in 1623, aged 45, with wife, Rebecca, aged 37, and son Francis aged 3. Even if he was the same man who married Agnes in 1615 [Note: Other sources state marriage was in June 1613.], why would he have left his three small sons in England and gone off with a new wife and child? (In 1623, Thomas would have been 8, Edmund about 5, and William about 3). Strongest argument against the supposed relationship is that there is not one child (known) named Francis in their progeny.

I came across this profile while researching my own family tree. Hope this helps.
