Biography

Alice Wolcott Brinley was born on 18 September 1886 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Charles Augustus Brinley and Mary Goodrich Frothingham. [1][2][3] [4][5][6]

Marriage

Alice married twice:
1. She first married Charles Goodhue King (1885-1908) in Philadelphia on 25 Feb. 1908. He died on 19 June 1908, two days after his brother-in-law Charles Edward Brinley (1878-1963) and Helen West (Frazier) Brinley (1882-1970) were married on 17 June 1908. Charles was involved in an automobile accident and, two days later, his heart gave out. It is believed he may have hit his head during the accident. Charles Goodhue King remembrance was noted on a stone, next to an apple tree at the entrance of the New Preston Cemetery.[7]

2. Secondly, Alice married an old friend, Frederick William Sherman (1862-1929) in New York City, 25 May 1922. Prior to the wedding, Alice was involved with caring for unwed mothers in the New York City area. [8]They had one daughter, Sarah Frances (Sherman) Tomaino (1926-2007) on 16 Feb. 1926 in the Greenwich CT Hospital. Prior to her husband dying in 1929, they lived at the Gables in Rye, NY.

In 1934, Alice moved to the Oliver Wolcott Homestead in Litchfield, Conn. The home was across from the Tappen Reeve Law Offices and the Bantam River ran through the back of the property. The Oliver Wolcott House was primarily owned by the Wolcott Family. Alice Wolcott, a great-granddaughter of Oliver Wolcott, owned it prior to Alice. It appears that the Sherman's must have rented the house since it was noted that Frederick died at the house in 1929. In the letters, there was mention of paying $500 and paying the taxes, prior to living there permanently. After reading a few more letters, it was determined that she inherited the house. [9]

Death

Alice died on 1 Nov 1975 (aged 89). She is buried with her husband: Frederick William Sherman in the East Cemetery. Also, her daughter: Sarah Frances Sherman, and son-in-law: Michael Francis Tomaino, a WWII Veteran, are buried in another section of the East Cemetery, Litchfield, Litchfield County, Connecticut. [10]

Letter to Katherine dated 10 Feb 1926

Great Aunt Alice had her only daughter at the Greenwich, Conn. Hospital. on Feb 16, 1926. Prior to the baby's birth, the baby was called "Pico." In a letter to her sister Katharine at the hospital, the baby must have kicked her... at the top of the letter... "Bad Baby" Birth Name Sarah, nickname: Sally. They lived at the Gables in Rye, NY.
