I am currently trying to determine if Elvisha Ellen Grover is different from Alvitia Gillespie. I believe they are two different people who were married to Isaac Small. Several documents for the children born after 1870 have various versions of the name Alvitia Gillespie listed as the mother. Those born before 1870, do not. I am looking for a marriage record for Alvitia and Isaac and a divorce/death record for Elvisha.
I found an article in newspapers.com which may be helpful.

“Fort Wayne Daily News”, (Fort Wayne, Indiana), 06 Dec 1880, page 1

Mrs. Isaac Small of Jefferson township, is the latest addition to the list of Allen county insane patients.
Here is another article.

“The Fort Wayne Sentinel “, (Fort Wayne, Indiana), 21 Aug 1899, page 3

FAMILY IS DESTITUTE.
The humane society is investigating the condition of the family of Isaac Small, who are reported to be In destitute condition In Jefferson townchlp. Trustee Fry came to Fort Wayne Saturday and made application for the admission of some of the children to the Allen County Orphans' home. A few years ago Isaac Small was a fairly well-to-do farmer in Jefferson township. Two years ago, It will be remembered, a negro visited the eastern part of Allen county and pretended to cure with herbs. Many of the people were impressed with his alleged herb cures and Incantations. Mrs. Small was especially influenced by the negro and finally sold her forty-acre farm for $1,000 and gave the money to the colored man. He promised to buy the family a better farm and took them with him to Kentucky. Nothing was heard from them until last week when the father and four children. one of them a married daughter, returned to Jefferson township In destitute circumstances. The married daughter carried an Infant which suffered from lack of care. The family told of the trip to Kentucky and of his leaving them without money. They finally again located him and while Mrs. Small was taking "treatment" she died suddenly. One day sometime after the negro went Away leaving $2 with the Smells and promised to return in the evening. He never came back and has not been seen or heard of since. The authorities aided the Small family to .return to Indiana and they made their way as best they could from town to town arriving in Monroeville Friday destitute and penniless. The humane society will asslst them.
