Henrique "Henri" Dumont was born on the 20th of July 1832 in Diamantina, Minas Gerais.[1][2][3] He was the second of the three children of French immigrants[2] Eufhrazie Françoise Honorée and François Honoré Felix Dumont.[3]
Henrique "Henri" Dumont was an engineer,[3] graduating from the School of Arts and Crafts (the equivalent of the Faculty of Engineering) in Paris at the age of twenty-one.[3] He married Francisca de Paula Santos on the 6th of September 1856.[1][3] Their son Alberto was famous for his hot air balloons and monoplanes.[4][5] Henri and Francisca are said to have had eight children.
In 1872 Henrique was responsible for the construction of the segment between Barbacena and Sabará of Pedro II railroad. He moved to the Engenho plantation, where his son Alberto was born.[6]
In March 1875 after finishing the railroad construction, moved to the Casal plantation, a property bought by his father in law, comendador Francisco de Paula Santos. In1979, after the death of his father in law, bought the Arindeúva plantation, and moved there with his family and 80 slaves. Dedicated himself to the production of cofee.[6]
In 1887 Henrique owned the largest agriculture plantation in Brazil, containing 5.7 million coffee plants. Henry was one of the most successful coffee growers in his time, and was considered the "second king of coffee in the world."[1][2][3] He helped create the first gasoline car with Henry Ford.[1][2] In October of 1888 it was reported that Henry signed an agreement yesterday with the Mogyana company to build a railway line from Ribeirao Preto to Arindiuba plantation, which was owned by him.[7]
Henrique had a tragic accident in December of 1890. He fell from a buggy on his farm, breaking his arm and hitting his head.[1] He was then a hemiplegic due to this.[1][3] Henry moved to France for treatment.[3] He died two years later in Rio de Janeiro, but not without giving his 18-year-old son some advice to move to Paris and dedicate himself to his studies. Henry urged his to direct his studies toward mechanics, physics, chemistry and electricity as he saw his fascination for machines.[3] He also took care of distributing his inheritance before that fateful day of 30 August 1892.[3]
