A very detailed and recent analysis, looking at new documents, has been made by the Medieval Genealogy Newsgroup, here. In summary, the connection to Eubolo is through John le Strange's first wife Eleanor, or Alianor, whose mother was Joan Bohun, who married three times, and was also known as Joan Somery, which is a cause of some confusion. Douglas Richardson writes: "Lady Joan Somery's third husband was Sir Ebal de Mont (or Monts), Knt. (died 1268), of Milton, Cambridgeshire, Ketton, Rutland, etc., co-seigneur of Mont, canton Vaud, Steward of the Household to King Henry III, Constable of Windsor Castle. While Joan had no issue by her 1st and 2nd husbands, Joan and Ebal had one daughter, Eleanor, wife of Sir John le Strange, Knt., 1st Lord Strange of Knockin (died 1309)". Eubolo is from the Latin form of the name, which was not apparently a well-known name in England. Canton Vaud, north of Lake Geneva is where the Lords of Mont built Rolle Castle in this period. See here for some details of his life. The French Wikipedia has an article about his family, wherein he is referred to as Ebal II des Monts. His parents were Ebal I des Monts, lord of Monts, and Beatrice. His elder brother Henri was heir to the lordship. The parents of Ebal I were Conon des Monts (also lord of Monts) and Adelais. The parents of Conon were Louis des Monts, lord of Monts, and Amblara.

Note

Cokayne, G.E., _The Complete Peerage_, Vol. XII, part 1, p. 353-3: John V LeStrange married first, Alienore, the daughter of Joan de Somery. However, apparently she was not the daughter of Joan's husband, Stephen de Somery, because when he died about 1240, his heirs were his four sisters. Joan de Somery's second husband was Godfrey de Crawcumbe. It is not clear if Cokayne believes Alienore to be the daughter of this second marriage of Joan de Somery.

I think we have an error here Katherine, where this Eleanor should not have the Somery LNAB or AKA. It's her mother, Joan.

Richardson:

"Lady Joan Somery's third husband was Sir Ebal de Mont (or Monts), Knt.

See also her husband John, who has a mother also called Joan Somery.

We ought to double-check the names and connected parents for this family group. And perhaps add some unconfusing , common paragraph to everyone involved?

I can't find Alinore being called "de Somery" in any documents. Visitation uses no surname at all. If there is not a source for calling her Somery, why not use her father's surname rather than that of one of her mother's other husbands. Would be less confusing.

Katherine can you adjust the LNAB? You are the only PM on this one. :)

Somery was a married name, so surname should become de Monts? See http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/GEN-MEDIEVAL/2014-03/1394225515
