Thomas Joshua Whitehurst was born in Beaufort county, North Carolina, a son of Batson Whitehurst, born circa 1757, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War, and DAR Ancestor #A124511. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of his on Thomas Whitehurst, who married Elizabeth P. (?nee) [1]
There are two Thomas Whitehurst, along with Hilery, Batson, John and Zachariah Whitehurst living in Beaufort county, North Carolina on the United States Census of 1820. An image of the census report may be viewed on FamilySearch.org. [2]
Soon after the 1820 Census was taken, this Whitehurst family moved together to Hawkins county, Tennessee, where Thomas' father wrote his Will on March 1, 1823 and died March 26, 1823. Thomas is named in his father's Will, as are Batson's grandchildren: Martha "Pasty", John, Thomas and Batson. [3] These children of Thomas Joshua Whitehurst and his wife, Elizabeth are found on the census reports of 1830 and forward under the surname of "Whitis."
Martha "Patsy" Whitis, born 1816, married Charles Claiborn Russell on August 18, 1836, in Hawkins county, Tennessee [4] They moved from Hawkins county Tennessee to Pulaski county, Kentucky, around 1850
John Whitis, born May 28, 1817, in Beaufort county, North Carolina, died September 13, 1890, in Pulaski county, Kentucky, married Susan J. Roberts, 1824-1901 [5]
Thomas Jefferson Whitis, born November 21, 1819, in Beaufort county, North Carolina, died November 2, 1905, in Kempner, Lampasas county, Kentucky, married Elizabeth Ann Burton, 1828-1909 [6]
