Joseph Edward Rudderham was an English prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the Seventh Bishop of Clifton from 1949 to 1974. He was Born to Father William Rudderham and Mother Agnes Mary Ann Coan on 17 Jun 1899 in Norwich, Norfolk, England.
He was sent away to St. Bede's Catholic College Convent in Manchester, and was recorded as a "inmate" while there as a Scholar in 1911. He later went on to Study at the Venerable English College, Roma, Diocese of Roma (Rome), Italy, where he was later ordained a Priest of Northampton. His Father William Rudderham left in his will £300 to pay for this education, and notably one eighth of his estate of £1192 2s 5d, to the then Bishop of Clifton for furtherance of the church.
Later in his life in 1949, Joseph Edward Rudderham would be Appointed as Bishop of Clifton, where later that year he was ordained as the Seventh Bishop of Clifton.
He retired from his position in 1974 aged 75 and become Bishop Emeritus of Clifton before passing away 5 years Later in 1979 aged 79, with his burial taking place at Holy Souls Cemetery, Arnos Vale, Bristol, Diocese of Clifton, Bristol, England, Great Britain.
Joseph was born on 17 June 1899 in Norwich, City of Norwich, Norfolk, England. He was the son of William Rudderham and Agnes Mary Ann Coan.
Joseph died at the age of 79 on 24 February 1979 in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham Borough, Gloucestershire, England.
Joseph was buried after 24 February 1979 in Holy Souls, Cemetery, Arnos Vale, Bristol, Diocese of Clifton, Bristol, England, Great Britain.
Probate: 24 April 1979 in Reads: "RUDDERHAM: Rt Rev Joseph Edward of Nazareth House, Cheltenham, Glos, died 24 February 1979, Probate Bristol 24th April. £11929 - 79070219Q".
During research for Joseph Edward Rudderham (1899-1979), There are a lot of Family Tree's (Mainly on Ancestry.com), which list a Alice Smith (1895–1980) as a wife of Joseph. Also Listed are children Helen M (1927–), Margery E (1929–), Maurice Arthur John (1930–1985). These Claims always seem to be unsourced and there is no marriage records listed in the trees in question to justify this.
Since Joseph Edward Rudderham (1899-1979) was not only an ordained priest, but went on to be ordained as Bishop of Clifton, and with celibacy requirements in the Catholic Church, it is extremely unlikely that he had a wife or fathered any children.

Extract from the Catholic Herald Newspaper Archives: in After his ordination in Rome in 1926 he served as a curate and then as parish priest at All Souls, Peterborough. In 1943 he was appointed Administrator of Northampton Cathedral and was consecrated Bishop of Clifton six years later. He was born in Norwich in 1899 and was educated at St Bede's College. Manchester, St Edmund's, Ware, and Christ's College, Cambridge. He concluded his studies for the priesthood at the Venerable English College in Rome.
Extract from the Catholic Herald Newspaper Archives: in Bishop Joseph Rudderham, the former Bishop of Clifton, died suddenly this weekend at Nazareth House, Cheltenham. He was Bishop of the Clifton diocese for 25 years and will he best remembered for his decision to replace the deteriorating pro cathedral in Park Place, Clifton, with a new cathedral.
Extract from the Catholic Herald Newspaper Archives: in His body lay in state in Clifton Cathedral on Wednesday and his solemn Requiem Mass and burial took place yesterday. He will be remembered as a man of great forthrightness with a soft spot for children and vintage cars. He enjoyed the travelling his pastoral responsibilities involved and in his 25 years as Bishop opened many new churches and schools throughout his diocese.
Extract from the Catholic Herald Newspaper Archives: in His new cathedral was opened on the Feast Day of St Peter and Paul in 1973. Bishop Rudderham retired the following year and went to live in Nazareth House. Ile attended all the sessions of the Second Vatican Council. A spokesman for the Clifton diocese said: "While by temperament he favoured the old ways, he loyally went along with the renewal of the liturgy and Church life ushered in by the Council."
