Biography

Jeremiah Selvidge was born in about 1795.

[Note that his surname spelling varies in records: Savage, Selvage, Sellorage (possibly a mistranscription of Sellvage), etc.]

He married Lucinda Cooley in Roane County, Tennessee on 13 July 1820 (the bond was posted on 12 July 1820). Thomas Moore cosponsored the marriage bond.^[1]

In 1830, he lived in Grainger County, Tennessee (surname "Selvidge"); a possible sibling, James Selvidge, appears on the line below him with presumed spouse and children.^[2] Jeremiah's household included the following:

• 1 male under age 5
• 1 female age 30-40 (probably Lucinda)
• 2 female age 5-10

In 1840, he lived in Grainger County, Tennessee (surname "Selvage").^[3] The household included the following people (one employed in manufacturing/trades):

Research Notes

While Ancestry trees list him as the son of Jeremiah Savage and Margaret Hanna, evidence suggests otherwise. His name is more consistently listed as Selvidge than Savage, and he married in Tennessee in 1820, when Jeremiah and Margaret Savage and family were still living in Stokes, North Carolina. His birthplace is also listed as Tennessee or (once) Virginia, but never North Carolina. It seems more likely that he is related to Selvidges in Tennessee, possibly including Jeremiah Selvidge. Roddy Savage, relative of Jeremiah Savage, appears on the same census page as Jeremiah Selvidge in 1840, which may be contributing to the confusion.
