Biography

Louisa was born in St Albert in 1888, the daughter of George Chalifoux and Angèle Delorme, both who had previous children from other partners. Louisa's first language was Cree, and she was raised speaking Michif and then English as well. Her half brother, William, anglicized the surname as Shelford and used that spelling on his scrip application in 1901. Following 1910 in Census and other records the surname of the family is sometimes found to be anglicized to Shelford as William often headed the household. This includes that surname spelling in the 1911 Census and in Louise's marriage record, to "Charlie" Rene Coutines, in 1920.

Louisa and Charlie (Rene Coutines) along with Harry and Rosie (Blake), Louise's children from a previous relationship, can be found as a family living near Lac La Nonne in 1926, on her half brother William's homestead property. When William passed away the homestead was lost, and the Coutines family eventually settled just over an hour east, in Coronado, adjacent to Lost Point Lake. Louisa has great and great great grandchildren that continue to live there, today.

Louise is remembered, lovingly, as 'old nanny' by her great grandchildren.
