Biography

James was born in 1 September, 1800[1][2][3]We can conclude that James was born in Perry County, Tennessee,as his parents, James Bedford Dickson and Elizabeth Ann Bowers , were living in Perry County the year of his birth, per the 1880 US Census [4]and were long residents of the area. (Also he lists his birth location as Tennessee in the 1900 census.[5])

In the 1900 US Census[5] James B Dickson is 20 years old, single and living with his parents family in Civil Districts 3, 11, Perry, Tennessee, United States.

In 1903 [James] Bedford married [Martha Lenora] Nora Ward on 10 January in Perry County, Tennessee.[6][7]

In the 1910 US Census[8] James and Family are living at Civil District 1, Perry, Tennessee.

On 16 April 1916 James' wife Martha Lenora "Nora" dies[9] leaving James with 5 children ages 12 and younger.

On 12 September 1918 James registers with the draft during World War I. He is farming for himself near Linden, Perry County, Tennessee.[10]

For the 1920 US Census[11]James (widow) and his four oldest children are living in Civil District 1, Perry County, Tennessee. The youngest daughter is living with her mother's family (Ward).[12]

1930 US Census[13]James is still farming. Two of the daughters and one grandson are living in the household. The youngest daughter is again living with her maternal family, the Ward Household.[14]

By 1940 US Census[15] James and daughter Ruth are living with his daughter Bernie and her family.

James' death is recorded as 15 Dec 1968 in Gibson, Tennessee[16]. "The Jackson Sun" Obituary stated that he had died at his home. [17]. The Obituary goes on to give his full name as James Bedford Dickson, 88 years of age, and that he was a retired farmer. His survivors included two sons, three daughters, a brother, 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grand-children.

Research Notes

There is a discrepancy in James' death date. The Jackson Sun published on Sunday the 15th of December states that he died on Friday which would have been Friday the 13th of December. His Find a Grave memorial records his death as 5 December 1968. His grave marker records Sept. 1, 1880 for his birth but Dec [blank] 1968 for his death.
