Ernst Alfred was born in 1920. Before the second world war he became a mechanic of the German railways in Dresden, Saxony. During the war he was stationed in France and took part in subway operations near St. Malo. He was prisoner of war in France and was forced to work in a lead mine. After a short time he was denazified and could return to the French occupied zone in South Western Germany. His mother Wilhelmine (who remarried later on) and older sister died during the heavy bombings of Dresden. Eastern Germany later became a socialist republic (DDR) and he never returned to his home town Dresden. He also had an older brother (Max born 1908) and another older sister (Dora born 1910). After the war, he worked as engineer in Rottweil trainstation fixing trains. Then he joined the Mauser company (engineering company who later became a weapon producer). Some engineers left Mauser to found Heckler & Koch (weapon producer), and he joined this group. He played hand ball and was the head of the Oberndorf athletic association. He spoke Saxon dialect. Alfred had black hair, was a rather dark-looking sporty type, and smoked heavily. He suffered from heart attacks and a brain stroke, and in the end had a stomach cancer. He lost his father at the age of four, who was injured during the first world war. His nick-name was 'Holzwurm' as his hobby was woodworking. [1]
