William was born in 1758. He was the son of Obadiah Holmes and Mary Clunn. “William, September 8, 1758 [born in Staten Island]" [1]
William's wife was named Mary Johnson according to the American Family of Rev Obadiah Holmes. They would have married around 1776 based on the age of their oldest child.
William was left a bequest in his father’s 18 Feb 1794 will “Secondly, my beloved son William Holmes to whom I also give one shilling”. Obadiah's widow received 1/3 of the estate (as was normal for her dower); the rest was divided between the three younger sons: Jacob, Joseph and Samuel. [2]
In 1797 his father's farm was sold and the siblings dispersed. “The Virginia home was broken up in the ping of 1797, when the farm was sold and the last of the brothers and sisters to make such removal - seven in all - finally crossed into the Northwest Territory - Obadiah, with his family, remaining in Wester Pennsylvania, and William, with his famly remaining in the Pan Handle." [3]
He passed away in 1801 or 1802. "He owned a Pan Handle, Virginia, farm adjoining that of his father and died there in 1802. His widow and children, at once, crossed the river and settled among the relatives near the Holmes Meeting House, [except] a young daughter..." Many family trees give his death date as 12 Dec 1801 without a source. [4]
