Hugh Porter Jr. was a South Carolina colonist.

Hugh was born in 1733, in Orange County, North Carolina.[1] . He was the son of Hugh Porter, Sr. and Violet Mackey.

His wife is unknown. No marriage record has been identified, and she is not listed in his will. The 1800 census includes 1 female age 45 and over; quite possibly his wife, which means she died between 1800 and 1808.

Hugh served in the Revolutionary War, in Ninety-Six District, under Capt. Jacob Barnett and Lt. Col. Henry Hampton.[2][3]

1800 census, Abbeville, South Carolina:

free white males 45 and over: 1 (Hugh)
free white females under 10: 1

This totals seven children, while his will lists 9. 1 or 2 (depending on whether granddaughter Mary Chiles Brightman was included in this listing) would have been grown and in their own households.

In his will of 1808, Hugh identifies these family members:[4]

James (deceased at recording),
Phillip
Violet (deceased at recording)
William
Mary
Hugh
John
Martha
Samuel

Granddaughter: Mary Chiles Brightman at the time of the recording of this she is not 18 nor wed.

His DAR record lists his wife as Mary E _____

Porter-1554 and Porter-21053 do not represent the same person because: Two different families; two different wills, one 1808 and one 1813. Research notes on Porter-1554 indicate he was probably born much later than the 1730's.
