Biography

Rebecca (Perry) Davis was born on 6 March 1827 in Ripley, Penobscot, Maine, United States.

Rebecca married Wilbur Morton Davis (~1825 - 1864) on 25 Oct 1849 in Carmel.

3. Orrin Wilbur Davis (1857 - 1932)

Some time after Wilbur's death in 1864 and the 1870 US Census she married Michael Taylor (1801-1892). They lived together in Herman.

After the death of her second husband she lived with her daughter in Gardner.

He son-in-law and the city of Gardner had her committed to AMHI on 17 August 1892. The admission indicated she was suffering from mania for four weeks prior to admission. She died at the Augusta Mental health Institute and is listed as buried in Carmel.

Research Notes

Looking for any information about Rebecca after 1860.

• After Wilur's death in Civil War, Rebecca married Michael Taylor and lived in Herman, ME. His wife Ruth died in 1863, so they would both have been widowed. Date of second marriage not found. He is married to a Rebecca in the 1870 and 1880 census in Herman. In the 1870 census there is a 19 year old Lydia Davis boarding with them. Lydia is shown alternatively as a Davis and a Taylor on her records when married to Seth Galloway.

• Death record shows burial in Carmel, ME. Byron Davis visited Carmel in 2022 and searched near her parents graves and did not find a stone for Rebecca. Some Davis monuments we're found that were missing from findagrave.com and added. A monument for a namesake of her son Orrin Davis was found. Not a known relation, but could point to a common ancestry they were both named after. Also searched in the town's larger cemetery. Here brother David was buried there the same year. No stone for Rebecca found near his, but unable to thoroughly search the entire cemetery that day. Spoke with the Sextant for Carmel and no records were found for her burial.

• More records are available for her time at AMHI at the Maine state archives. Need to check the 1892 book.

• Two of her granddaughters by way of Lydia were born in Gardner. This may mean that Rebecca went to live with her daughter after the death of her second husband. Unfortunately the 1890 census is not available to check.
