Biography

Spottswood Robinson III is Notable.

Civil Rights Pioneer, Federal Judge, Dean of Howard University Law School. In 1951 he took on the case of a black student in Virginia who complained that the all-black high school was inadequate. That case and others led to the Supreme Court's 1954 decision in Brown vs Board of Education of Topeka, Kan that struck down the "separate but equal" school policies in the South. His many accomplishments are detailed on his WIkipedia page and many other sources. Spottswood was born in 1916 in Richmond, Virginia.^[1] He was the son of Spottswood Robinson Jr and Inez Clements. His father had been a successful businessman and attorney in Richmond, where he was raised along with his two younger sisters. Spottswood married Marian Wilkerson before 1940, at which time he was teaching at Howard University Law School in Washington, DC. ^[2] He passed away in Richmond, Virginia in 1998 ^[3] and is buried in Riverview Cemetery, Richmond, Richmond City, Virginia.
