Biography

PVT John Smith served in the United States Civil War.

When John Peter Smith was born on 3 December 1835, in Gladehill, Franklin, Virginia, his father, William Henry Smith, was 26 and his mother, Susannah B Holland, was 24. He married Chester Albanie Holland on 9 November 1871, in Franklin, Virginia. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 9 daughters. He died on 25 June 1920, in Gladehill, Franklin, Virginia, at the age of 84, and was buried in Crafts Point, Franklin, Virginia.

John served in 2nd Virginia Calvary, Confederate States of America Army. From 2nd Virginia Calvary of the Virginia Regimental Histories Series; published by H E Howard Inc, Lynchburg VA; 1995; by Robert J Driver Jr and H E Howard; page 270: SMITH, JOHN PETER: Private in Company D; born in Franklin County 3 Dec 1835. Enlist in Franklin County 15 Mar 1862. Present 30 Sept - 31 Oct 1863 (sic). Absent on horse detail Nov - Dec 1862. Present Mar - Apr 1863; absent on horse detail July - Aug 1863. Absent sick with impetigo (skin disease caused by bacteria) in Richmond hospital 22 - 23 Sept 1863; present 31 Oct 1863 - May 1864. Wounded in Action (back) in Charles City County 25 June 1864; absent with wound in Richmond hospital 26 June 1864 until furloughed for 40 days 9 Aug 1864. No further record. Farmer, Glade Hill in 1916; died Glade Hill 25 June 1920; buried Blankenship-Smith Cemetery on route 866 in Franklin County. [1]
