Joan Murrell Owens was an American educator and marine biologist specializing in corals. She described a new genus, Rhombopsammia, and three new species of button corals.

Joan Murrell was born on 30 Jun 1933 in Miami, Dade, Florida, United States. She was the daughter of Dr. William H Murrell and Leola (Peterson) Murrell. She had a sister Willette Murrell Carlton.
In the 1940 census Joan (age 6) was the single daughter of William Merrell in Miami, Miami-Dade, Florida, United States.[1]
Joan married Frank Albert Owens on 30 June 1973 in the Ebenezer Methodist Church, Miami, Florida.[2][3] They had two daughters.[4]
