Biography

Martha Martin was born about 1782 in what became Fairfield County, South Carolina, USA in 1785. She was the daughter of Robert Martin, 1747–1806, and Nancy Polly Lindsay, 1748–1800. They had been married around 1770 in Kershaw, Lancaster, Camden District, South Carolina Province. [1]

Martha Martin married Joseph Snow (1772-1851) around 1804 most-likely in Randolph County, North Carolina, where he had been living since his father died in the early 1780s (his mother had remarried and moved to Randolph County when Joseph was still a child). Sometime between 1796 and 1813, Joseph, Martha and their older children left North Carolina, moving west to the Appalachians of eastern Tennessee, which had become a US state in 1796. The group was led by Joseph's older brother, Ebenezer Snow (b: 1758) and his family and included at least 2 other Snow brothers: John Sr. Snow and William Snow. Joseph Snow is known to have settled at the foot of a local landmark that became known as "Snow Hill," in Warren County, Tennessee. In 1837 that area became part of DeKalb County, when it was formed. It is still part of DeKalb County, Tennessee, today (2021).[2] [3]

Joseph and Martha (Martin) Snow had at least the following 7 children (there may have been more): [1]

  1. Charlotte Snow (Massey), 1807–1897
  2. Mary Snow (Boyd), 1808–1852
  3. Isaac Snow, 1814–1878
  4. John Snow, 1818–1880
  5. Martha Ann Snow (Slay), 1819–1884
  6. William Snow, 1823–1885
  7. Elizabeth Snow (McIntire), 1825-Before 1880 Census

Martha (Martin) Snow passed away sometime after the 1830 US Census that showed Joseph Snow had a household in DeKalb County, Tennessee, with a wife who was 40 to 49 years old (b: 1781-1790). Joseph Snow survived her passing and did not remarry. On the 1850 US Census he was recorded living on his family farm in DeKalb County, Tennessee, with his daughter, Martha Ann Snow, b. ca. 1721 [sic=20 May 1819]. He died in 1851 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. The burial site for Martha and Joseph Snow is unfortunately lost. They have no Find A Grave Memorials. [4]
