Miss Nellie C. Slaten married Simon Cowan on March 27, 1907 in Binger, Caddo county, Oklahoma. He was born Kentucky, 32 years old and resided in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma Territory while Nellie was 26 and resided in Binger.
Strangely enough, Simon's 1st wife Vina was still alive as of July 1908 in Anadarko, Caddo, Oklahoma when the 2 of them were having property sold at Sheriff's Sale because of foreclosure by Celia Dundon.
Simon and Nellie emigrated to Canada before 1911 as the direct result of a 1906 newspaper advertisement to purchase a quarter section (160 acres (65 ha)) of land for $10 and was among more than 10,000 black homesteaders who did so.[3][4]

Research Notes
It's apparent from Nellie Slaten Cowan's obituary that Charles, Estella, Edith and Marion Cowan were her step-children and if Frank and George Cowan were children born during her marriage to Simon Cowan, that they had died before Simon since they were not mentioned in his 1928 obituary.
