Biography

Sylinda Graves was born 14 May 1788, at or near Stockbridge or neighboring Tyringham, Massachusetts, and died 22 Apr 1871, at Craftsbury, Orleans, Vermont. Note that her death record gives her age as 84 yrs, 11 months and 8 days, implying birth in 1786, but her gravestone gives her age as "82 yrs 11 mos."^[1], which yields a calculated birth year of 1788; the 1788 birth is consistent with census records. She married Seth Tolman (later spelled Tallman) by 1814, the birth year of their daughter Vilona.

Sylinda appears in the 1850 US Census for Wolcott, Vermont, in the household of Seth Tolman, both age 62. The following children are also listed; the first two are theirs, but the relationships of the Bingham and Marcy children to the Tolmans are not given: William Tolman, age 19; Ruth Tolman, age 16; Mary Bingham, age 9; Edward Marcy, age 10; Ephram Marcy, age 8; Christiana Marcy, age 6. The Marcy children are in fact grandchildren of Sylinda and Seth Tolman; their daughter Vilona (aka Philena) married Marvin Marcy. In 1850, Vilona and Marvin – as noted in Vilona's profile – were residing in Boston; the census shows them in the city's 5th Ward, and shows Marvin as a "Machinist". Quite possibly the Boston residence, which was temporary, was work-related for him.

The next entry in the 1850 Census is for their son David A. Tolman, age 33, and his family (wife Hannah, age 29, and five young children, James, Vilana, Sylinda, Sarah, and Merva Tolman.) ^[2]

In 1860, the Census now spells their name Tallman. Seth and Sylinda are now age 72, still living in Wolcott, VT. Still living with them is Mary Bingham, now listed as a domestic, age 19, and her daughter Mabel Bingham, age 2.^[3]

The 1870 Census for Wolcott shows Seth and Sulinda Tolman at age 82 living with Orilla Tolman, age 45, and Minnie Marcy, age 11, relationships not given. ^[4]

Research Notes

The 1790 inaugural U.S. Census for Tyringham, Massachusetts, shows the household of Thaddeus Graves as including four "Free white Females"^[5]; there is no indication of their ages, or even of an age range for the group. One of the four is certainly Thaddeus's wife, Amy (or Ame); one is presumably daughter Achsah, born at Tyringham in 1782^[6], and another, daughter Anne, born there in 1784 ^[7]. It seems a reasonable assumption that the fourth female is Sylinda, born in 1788, but for whom no birth record has to date (August 2023) been located; her 1871 Vermont death record places her birth at Stockbridge, Massachusetts – which adjoins Tyringham – and names her father as Thaddeus. (Her mother's given name is shown as "Anna", rather than Amy or Ame, but this seems an error that is likely the result of the time elapsed since Ame's death in 1836, and perhaps the uncertainty of the informant.)^[8]
