Jennifer Hudson is an American singer and actor. She has won numerous awards for both her music and acting, including an Academy Award, two Grammy Awards, a Tony Award and an Emmy Award, making her one of the handful of performers who has earned an EGOT.[1][2]
Jennifer Hudson was born in 1981 in Chicago, where she grew up.[3][4] She was the daughter of Samuel Simpson, a bus driver, and Darnell Hudson. The family lived in Englewood, a community in the South Side of Chicago.[3].
Jennifer began singing in her grandmother Julia Hudson's church, the Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church.[3]
Although she had already landed a major role in 2001 in a Chicago theater production[3] and had a music recording contract in 2002[5] her career skyrocketed in 2004 when she got to the finals of American Idol, which led to a role in the musical film "Dreamgirls" released in 2006. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 2007 for that performance.[6]
Tragedy struck in 2008 when her mother, brother Jason, and 7-year old nephew were killed by her sister's husband. He was later sentenced to three life sentences.[7] She secluded herself for a period of time after the murders before resuming performances.
In 2009 Jennifer won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album with her self-titled debut album. [8]
Jennifer has gone on to have a very prolific film, television and singing career which is still active.[9] Most recently, in the February 2022 NAACP Image Awards, she won the Entertainer of the Year and Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for her portrayal of Aretha Franklin in the film "Respect."[10]
Jennifer has a son born in 2009 from her relationship with David Otunga.[11]
