Biography

Birth

Berle (ברל) Daniller was born in November 1881[1] in the town of Žagarė (זשאַגער or Zhager in Yiddish), in what was then Shavli Uyezd, Kovno, in the Russian Empire (now Lithuania). She was the daughter of Pinchas (פּינחס) Daniller and Tzipa (ציפה) Eydeson.[2][3]

Emigration

Bertha (Daniller) Blumenthal migrated from the Russian Empire to the United States of America.

Berle emigrated from the Russian Empire to America and settled in the Boston area as a young woman, departing from Hamburg, Germany, on the Belgravia on 16 May 1900 with her younger sister Hene (חענע) and brother, who appears from the passenger list to have been originally named Isaac (אייזק), but later became known as Jacob or Jack. The passenger manifest reflects that the three siblings were traveling from "Zagary" in Russia to Boston to join their uncle "Hirsch Edison," at 273-275 Cambridge, who had paid for their tickets.[3] The 1900 Boston City Directory confirms that this uncle was their mother Tzipa's brother Harris Edison, whose furniture store was located at 273 Cambridge Street in Boston.[4] Harris Edison was apparently the first of several Edison family members to emigrate from Zagare to the Boston area.

Her father emigrated to Boston in 1901, and her mother and younger sisters followed in 1902.[5] After their arrival in America, the Daniller family began using the last name of "Daniels." Her father became known as "Paul," her mother as "Celia," and Berle (ברל) became known as "Bertha." Paul Daniels appears in the Boston City Directory by 1906, living at 213 Marion Street in East Boston.[6]

Marriage

On 14 March 1909, Bertha Daniels married Abraham Blumenthal in Boston. She was still living with her parents at 213 Marion Street in East Boston at the time of her marriage.[2]

Later Life

By 1920, Abraham and Bertha Blumenthal had become the owners of the "Kimball View House," an inn located in the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire. They were residing at the Kimball View House when counted in the 1920 census, along with four of their children and Bertha's father Pinchas.[7] The 1920-22 White Mountain directory advertises the Kimball View House as a "spacious house...situated in the heart of the White Mountain region," with "[e]very room exposed to the Wonderful Breezes" and "NONE BUT FRESH FOOD SERVED (Strictly Kosher)."[8]

The Daniels family maintained residences both at the Kimball View House in New Hampshire and in Boston for many years after that. As a result, they were double-counted in New Hampshire and Boston in the census records for both 1930 and 1940 - and in 1930, they were triple-counted due to a census error in Boston.[9][10][11][12][13]

Death

Bertha Daniels died on 24 June 1953 in Brookline, Massachusetts.[14][1]

Children of Bertha Daniels and Abraham Blumenthal include:

Research Notes

Original Birth Name

The identification of her Yiddish name at birth is based on the ship manifest of the Belgravia, which transliterates it as "Berle Daniller." The first name is likely ברל. The family name is transliterated in many variants in the records, including Daniler, Danielar, Daniellar, and others. Daniller is the spelling used in her passenger list, and also the list documenting her father's arrival in 1900, so that is used as the LNAB for this profile. No record has been found confirming the original Yiddish spelling, but it was probably דנלר.

Origin in Žagarė

Her origin in Žagarė is based on the 1900 passenger list of the Belgravia,[3] and confirmed by the 1902 passenger manifest of the Friesland (documenting the arrival in America of her mother and four younger sisters) and the naturalization petitions of her sisters Sadie and Esther.[15]
