Biography

Mary Gale, the daughter of Bethiah Chipman and her first spouse Unknown Gale, was born about 1689, at Sandwich Massachusetts. The original index of Sandwich Vital Records states that page 3 - missing for several years - contained births for Bethia Gale's family. Mary died probably at Tolland Connecticut, about 1755, according to her grandson, Ebenezer Nye.[1]

She married first Jonathan Bassett, son of William & Rachel (Williston) Bassett, on 14 May 1708 at Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts.[2] Their known children, born at Sandwich, Massachusetts, were:[1]

  • Jonathan, b. 10 Sep 1709[3]
  • Bethia, b. 10 Mar 1710-1[4]

After the death of Jonathan she married as his second wife, Ichabod Hinckley, son of John & Bethia (Lothrop) Hinckley, on 3 Aug 1721 at Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts.[5] Mary and Ichabod's known children were:[1]

  • Thankful, b. 2 Dec 1722; baptized December 16, 1722; m. 1) Jonathan Hatch[6] and 2) George Nye; d. 1802[7]
  • Mercy, born November 22, 1726; baptized December 18, 1726; no further record[8]
  • Ebenezer, born about 1728; baptized April 19, 1730, no further record found.

Mary was named in her grandfather, Elder John Chipman's will dated November 12, 1702, probated May 17, 1708. She was named as one of his grandchildren. Mary's grandfather's widow, Ruth Chipman, in her will of December 6, 1710, called her "Mary Bassett of Barnstable".[1]

William Bassett Sr., of Sandwich, the father of Mary's first husband, Jonathan Bassett, in his will dated February 22, 1720, proved October 16, 1721, gave to "my daughter-in-law, Mary Bassett, relict of my son, John Bassett, deceased, all the household goods which I had of the said Jonathan Bassett, my son, for payment of what I laid out for him on the new house which he sold." William Basset ordered his son, Nathan Bassett, to pay "unto Bethiah Bassett, my granddaughter," [Jonathan's daughter] £10 when she arrived at the age of 18, or marriage. He gave his grandson, Jonathan Bassett [Jonathan's son] some land in Sandwich and all of his land in Connecticut.

I agree, I see no reference to a husband Hatch and suspect "Hatch" came from the daughter Thankful's married name.

And that certainly looks like her death Mary w/o Ichabod in the place you would expect.

Wiley would you please make the changes. Last Name at Birth = Gale. Current last name=Hinckley. Other Last name = Basset, Bassett

LNAB should be changed to Gale.

Unless there is a later marriage not mentioned in the bio, Hatch should be removed as a last name, and Hinckley should be the final last name. Thanks :-)

Could this be her death record?

Name: Mary Hinckley [Mary Hinkley, Hinkeley] Death Date: 8 Jan 1769 Death Place: Tolland, Connecticut, USA Spouse: Ichabod

White, Lorraine Cook, ed. The Barbour Collection of Connecticut Town Vital Records. Vol. 1-55. Baltimore, MD, USA: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1994-2002.

Update: She has a FindAGrave https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/10312415/mary-hinckley with a wrong birth date of 1740. But it does include a headstone photo. The inscription is partially obscured by grass, but definitely identifies her as wife of Ichabod and *seems* to say she died at age 88. This would provide a rough birth year of 1681.
