Ashley was born 4 Jan 1830 in Maryland, Otsego, New York, United States. His parents were Samuel Buffington Chase (1789-1870) and Lydia D. Spencer Chase (1795-1865).^[1]

Ashely was living in Hamlin, Kansas when he enlisted on 20 Aug 1861 into the Union Army as Private in Company A, 7th Regiment, Kansas Cavalry. He mustered out 31 Aug 1864.^[2][3]In April 1863 while stationed at Germantown, Tennessee, Ashley and another solder were captured by the Confederates. They were imprisoned at Richmond, Virginia and were later exchanged at City Point, Virginia. He then visited his Kansas home and rejoined his regiment at Cornith, Mississippi.^[4] (found at ^[1])

The 7th Kansas Cavalry (also known as Jennison's Jayhawkers) was organized at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on 28 Oct 1861. It mustered in for 3 years. During Ashley's time in the service, the Regiment was engaged in the following Battles: 2nd of Corinth, Little Blue River, 2nd of Independence, Byram's Ford and Mine Creek. ^[5]

Ashley married Emma Belts (1852-1935) on 25 Jan 1874 in Brown, Kansas, United States.^[6][7]

In 1886 and 1888 Ashley registered to vote in Santa Ana, Los Angeles, California, ^[8][9] and in 1890, 1892 and 1896 in Orange, California.^[10][11][12]

He passed away 2 Feb 1903 in California, United States and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California.^[1]

Ashley's wife Emma received a widow's pension at his death.^[13]
