t: Euphemia arrived in the colony as a bounty immigrant on the ship 'Fairlie' on 6 Dec 1838. She could both read and write. Bounty emmigrants list has mother as Ely.

The Australian Dictionary of Biography says that Euphemias parents were Joseph Allen and Eliza. I suspect that the father was actually William Allan and mother was Euphemia Hutchison. Euphemia Bowes has a daughter she named Euphemia Hutchinson Bowes. On the immigration logs to Australia for Isabella Syme it mentions she had an Aunt Euphemia Bowes (nee Allen) living in Camden. Isabellas mother was Christian Allan. Christians parents were William Allan and Euphemia Hutchison. Isabella married Owen Oxley in Mudgee in 1855. The Bowes were in Mudgee around 1855-57.

No parents are listed on Euphemia Bowes death certificate.

If Christian Allan was the sister of Euphemia Bowes (Allen), then everything fits. Euphemia is the Aunt of Isabella Syme, and both Euphemia and Christian would share a mother, Euphemia Hutchison (Euphemia Bowes had a daughter she named Euphemia Hutchison Bowes). Hutchison is the maiden name of Christian's mother.

Euphemia Bowes was president of the NSW branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union (founded 1882) in her older age - she was b. 1816, d. 1900.

Lived at Auburn, Middelton St, Stanmore at time of death.

Interestingly there was in the Grays Annual Directory of 1834 in Edinburgh, a Hutchison and Bowe Grocers, Wine and Spirit dealers of 20 Couper St, Edinburgh.

DEATH OF MRS. E. B. BOWES. ^[6]

The death is announced of Mrs Euphemia Bridges Bowes relict of the late Rev John Bowes, which took place at her residence, Middleton Street, Stanmore on Monday night, at the advanced age of 80 years. The deceased lady was a colonist of long standing. She arrived in the colony in the year 1837, and was married to her late husband in Parramatta in the year 1842. For many years Mrs Bowes laboured diligently with her husband in the work of the Church in some of its most extensive and laborious charges, such as Wollongong, Camden, Mudgee, Macleay River, Singleton, and other districts. The deceased lady was a woman of great individuality and force of character. Her work as a class leader and sick visitor was greatly appreciated and secured to her quite a number of lifelong friends. On the inception of the Women's Christian Temporance Union movement in Australia. Mrs Bowes espoused the cause with characteristic ardour and was elected its first Australian president.

The office she continued to hold until a few years ago, when she retired on account of ill health. She was then unanimously elected honorary life president.

Two of Mrs Bowes sons are in the Wesleyan ministry, vis, the Rev J Bowes, of Warwick (Queeusland) and the R B Bowes, of Ballina, Richmond River. The late Mr J E Bowes, for many years MLA for Morpeth, was also one of her sons. Three sons and four daughters survive her.

The funeral took place yesterday, and was largely attended. A special service was held in the Stanmore Wesleyan Church at 1:30 pm, and was conducted by the Rev J E Curruthers, assisted by the Rev Dr Sellors, the Rev J E Rodd, and the Rev F C Boyer. There was a large congretation including representatives from the various branches of tho Womens' Christian Temporance Union The interment took place in the Wesleyan Cemetery Rookwood. An address was delivered by the Rev Dr Sellors, and the ladies from the Womens' Temperance Union sang several hymns Between 40 and 50 beautiful wreaths were placed on the grave, including those sent by the following: -The Sydney branch of the W.C T U , the executive officers of the W C T U, the Petersham branch of the W C T U , the Ashfield union, the Erskineville girls' sewing class, the Marrickville ladies society class, the Stanmore Christian Endeavour Society, the Rev Dr Moulton and family the firm of Messrs G T Miller and Co, where Mr William Bowes is employed, end kora a large circle of relatives and friends.
