Barnim (later Barnim IX) of Pomerania (von Pommern) was a younger son of Bogislaw X, Duke of Pomerania, and his second wife, Anna of Poland, and was born on 2 December 1501.[1],[2],[3]
He was educated at the University of Wittenberg, where he was also an honourary rector. While he was there he attended Luther's disputation in 1519 and became a convert and promoter of the reformation.[2]
As Barnim IX he succeeded his father as Duke of Pomerania (Herzog von Pommern) in 1523 ruling jointly with his elder brother Georg I.[1] When his brother Georg died in 1531 he ruled jointly with his nephew Philipp I, but they divided Pomerania in 1532, though not finalised until 1541.
